what does the lymphatic system consist of?
lymph fluid, lymphatic vessels, lymphatic tissues and organs
1 of 25
functions of lymphatic system
circulating body fluids to defend against pathogens, draining excess interstitial fluid, transporting dietary fluids, protecting agains invasion
2 of 25
what is lymph?
each day 20L from blood capillaires to tissue, 17L returns to blood and 3L pass into lymph
3 of 25
what are the primary organs?
stem cells, thymus, bone marrow,
4 of 25
what are secondary organs & tissue?
immune response, lymph nodes, lymphatic nodules & spleen
5 of 25
whats the dendritic cells in thymus do?
helps mature T cells
6 of 25
whats the epithelial cells in thymus do?
educate T cells
7 of 25
whats the macrophages cells in thymus do?
clear out dying or dead T cells
8 of 25
how many lymph nodes are there roughly?
600
9 of 25
what are lymph nodes?
they are filters that capture foreign bodies, they have more afferent vessels compared to efferent vessels
10 of 25
whats the spleen?
largest mass of lymphatic tissue that contains both red pulp and white pulp
11 of 25
whats natural passive immunity?
passed on from mother to fetus
12 of 25
whats natural active immunity?
getting the disease
13 of 25
whats artifical passive immunity?
injecting antibodies
14 of 25
whats artifical active immunity?
immunisation of dead cells
15 of 25
whats innate immunity?
non-specific resistance that prevents microbes accessing body
16 of 25
whats the first line of defence?
chemical & physical barrier - outer layer of skin
17 of 25
whats the second line of defence?
internal defence: interferons, iron-binding proteins, antimicrobial proteins, complement system, phagocytes & NK cells
18 of 25
whats adaptive immunity?
specific immunity: cell-mediated and anti-mediated
19 of 25
whats the difference between cell-mediated and anti-mediated?
CELL - cells attack cells, cytotoxic T cells directly attack antigens, ANTI - B cell develop into plasma cells, antibodies bind to antigen
20 of 25
whats clonal selection?
T and B cells clone include effector and memory cells
21 of 25
whats an antigen?
causes the body to produce specific antibodies or specific T cells
22 of 25
whats immunological memory?
long last antibodies & lymphocytes produced by clonal selection, stronger & faster in 2nd time
23 of 25
whats an antibody?
y or t shaped that is specific to a specific antigen
24 of 25
whats a B cell?
remain in lymph node, spleen & lymphoid tissue, formed in red bone marrow, when activated it transfers into plasma cells to produce antibodies
