  • Processes of infection
    • Colonization
      • infectious microorganisms exist in reservoirs (environment, animals, infected humans)
      • Transmitted via direct contact, vectors (insects) or by direct exposure (faecal oral transmission through food, water or soil.)
      • Human-human transmission through aerosolised microorganism's in droplets or physical contact
      • after deposit in receptive environment
    • Invasion
      • Infectious agent can invade surrounding tissues
      • Developed mechanisms to penetrate tissues and avoid hosts nonspecific and specific defences (inflammation+ immunity)
    • Multiplication
      • warm and nutrient filled host environment
      • Undergo rapid multiplication-replicate with infected cells (viral pathogens); replicate in macrophages +other cells( bacterial pathogens)
    • Spread
      • produce localised infections without spread to other regions of the body
      • Other highly invasive- may enter lymphatics, blood or internal organs
      • successful spread- relies on virulence factors
      • If host has;  1) intact immune system-microorganisms remain localised       2) immune or inflammatory system compromised - infection may spread rapidly
