- Processes of infection
- Colonization
- infectious microorganisms exist in reservoirs (environment, animals, infected humans)
- Transmitted via direct contact, vectors (insects) or by direct exposure (faecal oral transmission through food, water or soil.)
- Human-human transmission through aerosolised microorganism's in droplets or physical contact
- after deposit in receptive environment
- Invasion
- Infectious agent can invade surrounding tissues
- Developed mechanisms to penetrate tissues and avoid hosts nonspecific and specific defences (inflammation+ immunity)
- Multiplication
- warm and nutrient filled host environment
- Undergo rapid multiplication-replicate with infected cells (viral pathogens); replicate in macrophages +other cells( bacterial pathogens)
- Spread
- produce localised infections without spread to other regions of the body
- Other highly invasive- may enter lymphatics, blood or internal organs
- successful spread- relies on virulence factors
- If host has; 1) intact immune system-microorganisms remain localised 2) immune or inflammatory system compromised - infection may spread rapidly
- Colonization
