stage 1- Colonization
-This is when the microorganism sticks and stabilises itself to an area such as an IV line.
- this can occur through direct or indirect contact with a microorganism for example a (mosquito is a vector that indirectly colonies)
- Can also be spread by aer

stage 2-Invasion
- When an infectious agent invades and surrounds tissue/other sites
- some infectious agents can develop ways in which to avoid the immune system for example they may hide in the hosts other cells by invading into the cells and travelling throughout the

stage 3- Multiplication
- when the infectious agent has optimum conditions including warm, moist and nutrients available they will undergo rapid multiplication (binary fission)
- the virus will replicate within the host cell it uses the host's own replication system to change i

stage 4- spread
- can spread locally via the lymphatics, blood system and internal organs
- to spread successfully it needs appropriate factors virulence factors, adhesion molecules(allows it to stick to a surface) it may produce its own toxins which stop activation or
