research support for LTM + STM being separate stores in the multi-store model

Baddley (coding) found that in LTM we mix up word groups that have the same meaning (semantically similar) and in STM we mix up word groups that sound the same (acoustically similar) = shows LTM + STM are separate stores, which supports the MSM idea.

there is case study evidence which shows there could be separate stores in STM (the MSM says it is a single store)

Shallice + Warrington: studied KF who had amnesia. his recall from STM was worse when digits were read out loud, by someone else. his STM recall when he read the digits himself was better. this shows there is separate auditory + visual stores in STM.

the multi-store model makes 'long term memory' too simple

there is research that shows LTM isnt on unitary store. there is 1. episodic (memories of events)... 2. procedural (memory of how to perform tasks)... 3. semantic (facts about the world) = MSM simplifies LTM bcos it doesnt include the separate stores
