A representation of how memory works by three stores; sensorary register, STM and LTM. Also describes how info is transferred from one store to another, how it's remembered and how it's forgotten.
1 of 6
Sensory Register
Memory for each the senses, vision (iconic), hearing (echoic). Coding in iconic is visual and echoic is acoustic. Large capacity and short duration of less than half a sec. Info only passes to memory is you pay attention to it.
2 of 6
Short-Term Memory (STM)
7 +- 2, coded acoustically, duration 30 secs if not rehearsed. If maintenence rehersal occurs for long enough , into passes to LTM.
3 of 6
Long-Term Memory (LTM)
Permenant memory store if rehearsed for prolonged time, capacity is unlimited. To recall from LTM, info is transferred back to STM through retrieval.

Evaluation - Supporting Research Evidence
Baddeley found that coding in STM and LTM is clealy different meaning the stores are seperate and independent.

Evaluation - More Than One Type of STM; Case Study KF
MSM states there is only one type of STM. KF had amnesia, STM acosutic memory was poor but STM semantic memory was better. WMM describes more than one store for STM.
