Key Terms 1

  • Residential- A place where people live. Key features are: housing, transport, networks, shops, schools and healthcare. An example is Thatcham.
  • High Density- A place which has a high population in close proximity. Key features are: Apartments, Flats and Other Buildings. An example is New York.
  • Green Space- An area which has been dedicated for nature and recreational uses. Key features are: Trees, Ponds, Lakes, Rivers and Plants. An example is Victoria Park.
  • Gentrification- A place which has been modernised and improved. Key features are Supermarkets, Modern Housing and Modern Facilities. An example is Notting Hill.
  • Traffic Management- Methods put in place to control traffic levels. Key features include Traffic Lights, Chevrons, Road Signs, Roundabouts, Parking/Speed restirctions and Bus/Cycle Lanes. An example is London.
  • Detached- A series of buildings which are not connected to anything else. Key features are Driveways, Gardens, Garages, Parking Facilities and Parking Zones. An example is the outskirts of Thatcham.
  • Terraced- A series of buildings which are connected together. Key features are Tightly Packed, Victorian Housing and Little/Lack of Parking. An example is Newbury.

  • Traditional- Historical land use. Key features include Churches, Schools, Doctors, Police Stations and Highstreets. An example is Thatcham.
  • Commercial- An area which is making or intending to make a profit. Key features include A shopping centre including Shops, Toilets and Restaurants. An Example is The Oracle, Reading
  • Deindustrialised- Areas which were industrialised but is now used for other purposes. An example is Closure of factories and other facilities and abandoned builidngs. An example is the United Kingdom.
  • Shopping Centre- An area where a variety of shops are located. Key features are shops, restaurants and toilets. An example is The Oracle, Reading.
  • Thriving- An area which is at an optimum level of visitors etc. Key features are busy area, shops and restaurants. An example is Dubai.
  • Corner Shop- A shop used for basic goods for basic convenience. Key features are Food, Tills and Other recreational resources. An example is Thatcham.
  • Friendly- An area where people are kind to one another. Key features are people, services e.g. education, healthcare, police and hospital. An example is Rome.
  • Noisy- Where a large amount of noise is being made. Key features are same as above and transport. An example is New York

  • Multicultural- An area which embraces different cultures from around the world. Key features include different religions and different restaurants. An example is Thatcham.
  • Vibrant- An area of bright and striking colour. Key features include stand out buildings. An example is New York.
  • Graffiti- Artistic Drawings painted onto walls of buildings. Key features include vibrant colours, patterns and intricate design. An example is Thatcham.
  • Flats- A building containing a series of living areas. Key features include tall building and a large number of windows. An example is London.
  • Leisure- Use of free time for enjoyment. Key features include entertainment in a large portion e.g. cinema or bowling. An example is Devon.
  • Redevelopment- An urban area in which all/most buildings are demolished/rebuilt. Key features modern buildings and constructions. An example is Durham.
  • Derelict- Somewhere which is run down, abandoned etc. Key features include Degradation, smashed windows, graffiti. An example is Glendale.
  • Parks- A field are for recreational activities to occur. Key features scenary, benches, sports equipment e.g. goals and hoops. An example is Hyde Park.
  • Playground- Somewhere with things for children to play on. Key features include swings, slides and monkeybars. An example is Thatcham
