Social Influence: Conformity: Asch (1955)

?
What was the aim?
To investigate the degree to which individuals would conform to a majority who gave obviously wrong answers
1 of 11
What was the procedure?
123 American male students took part in what they believed was a visual perception test. They were placed in groups of confederates. They had to look at lines and compare them. There were 18 trials, 12 were critical. The real pp answered last.
2 of 11
What were the findings?
The control group had an error rate of 0.04%. On the 12 critical trials there was 32% conformity. 75% conformed at least once. 5% conformed to all 12 wrong answers.
3 of 11
What were the 3 reasons the post-interviews found for conformity?
Distortion of action (compliance), Distortion of perception (identification), Distortion of judgement (internalisation)
4 of 11
What were the conclusions?
The judgements of individuals are affected by majority opinions, even when they're wrong.
5 of 11
What were the conclusions?
There are big individual differences in the amount to which people are affected by majority influence. As most participants conformed publicly not privately, it suggests that they were motivated by normative social influence.
6 of 11
What were the evaluative points?
Asch's method for studying conformity became a paradigm, the accepted way of conducting conformity research.
7 of 11
What were the evaluative points?
As only one real participant is tested at a time, the procedure is uneconomical and time-consuming. Crutchfield (1954) performed similar research, but improved on the procedure by testing several participants at once.
8 of 11
What were the evaluative points?
The situation was unrealistic and so lacked mundane realism. It would be unusual to be in a situation where you would disagree so much with others as to what was the "correct" answer in a situation.
9 of 11
What were the evaluative points?
Asch's study was unethical, as it involved deciet; participants believed it was a study of visual perception. It also involved psychological harm, with participants put under stress through disagreeing with others
10 of 11
What were the evaluative points?
As the overall conformity rate on the critical trials was only 32%, the majority of people are actually not conformist, but independent.
