Define Energy
Energy- Ability to perform work or put mass into motion ( J)
1 of 19
Define Work
Work-Ability to apply force over a distance ( Work= force (N) x Distance moved (m) (J)
2 of 19
Define Power
Power-Rate at which we can work. P= work= WxM (W)
3 of 19
What are the 3 energy systems?
ATP/PC system (alactic system) , Lactic acid System ( Lactic system) and Aerobic glycolysis system
4 of 19
What is the formula for PC/ATP re synthesis?
PC= C ( Creatine Kinase (ENERGY)) P --> C+Pi --> energy + ADP= ATP
5 of 19
What triggers the alactic system?
When ATP levels fall and ADP levels rise ( stimulates release of creatine kinase)
6 of 19
Advantages to Alactic system
1)Doesn't require oxygen so happens instantly. 2)Used for high intenisty exercises e.g high jumping, kiciking a ball, 3)Recovery time is very quick
7 of 19
Disadvantages to Alactic system
2) stores may run out if used constantly as 1 can be synthesised at a time 2) only creates 1 ATP per PC splitting 3) only provides energy for max of 10 secs 4) only small amount of PC stored in mUscles
8 of 19
Formula for lactic acid system?
Glucose --> 2 ATP ( PFK) --> Pyruvic acid --> Lactic acid (LDH)
9 of 19
What stimulates the lactic acid system?
A decrease in PC stores activates enzyme glycogen phosphorylase to break glycogen to glucose.
10 of 19
Advantages to lactic system
1) no oxygen needed 2) can store lots of glycogen, can keep regenerating ATP 3) Can be provided in high intensity exercise, (anywhere from 15 seconds to 3 minutes)
11 of 19
Disadvantages to lactic system
1) produces lactic acid as a by product 2) Used up quickly
12 of 19
Stages of aerobic system?
1)Aerobic glycolysis- 2 ATP 2) Krebs cycle- 2 ATP 3) ETC- 34 ATP
13 of 19
Advantages of aerobic system
1) large amounts of ATP produced 2) No harmful by products 3) Activity can be sustained for hours
14 of 19
Disadvantages of aerobic system
1) need for oxygen so cannot resynthesise immediately 2) system cannot produce ATP while working at high intensity
15 of 19
What are the benefits of aerobic training?
increase/prolong aerobic threshold , increase the potential intensisty of performance, helps delay OBLA
16 of 19
Factors affecting energy systems used
Intensity and duration of exercise , OBLA , Energy system thresholds, O2 transport and supply, Fitness lvl, enzyme activation lvl, food/fuel avail
17 of 19
Features of The alactacid ( rapid recovery stage)
1) Restores phosphogen stores as elevated respiration helps resynthesise muscles' store of ATP and PC 2) replenish muscles stores of myoglobin and haemoglobin with o2 3) 50% restored in 30 secs
18 of 19
Features of lactacid ( slow recovery stage)
1) slower process 2) responsible for the removal/conversion of lactic acid in either pyruvic acid to the krebs cycle or to glycogen, glucose or protein.
