They can help cope with traumatic life events, help an individual maintain a healthy lifestyle, help avoid loneliness, provide a sense of beloning, self-worth and self-confidence.

They develop in different contexts between people who are not related or friends. They don't involve emotional attachments but are importnat to social development.

What happens during infancy?
Infants have an in-built tendency to interact with carers. They make their first relationships as they form an emotional attachment to carers.

What happens in early childhood?
Children learn social roles and behaviour within the family (primary socialisation), and they learn to co-operate with other children (co-operative play). Near the eand of this life stage children form circles of friends who get on with each other.

What happens in adolescence?
A person's sense of self-worth may be more influenced by their peers than their family. Some adolescents have a smooth transition to adult roles whereas others may have a difficult time.

What happens in adulthood?
Early adulthood is mostly dominated by forming intimate partnerships and the need to find employment or a career. In middle adulthood people may experience time pressures that may limit their social activity.

What happens in later adulthood?
After retirement, older adults have more free time to develop friendships. Some may choose to increase their involvement with close friends and family rather than extending their network of social contacts.
