GCSE RE - Mary

Both the Roman Catholic and Orthodoz churches hold Mary in special veneration. However, they do not worship her (only God can be worshipped) they honour her. She is a role model for all Christians.

The Annunciation

The Annunciation was Mary accepting God's invitation to become mother of Jesus.

WHAT? - The angel Gabriel came to her and announced that she had been chosen. She asked how could it be since she was a virgin but Gabriel said that the Holy Spirit would work through her. She accepted with the words, "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said."

QUALITIES? - Here, Mary shown commitment to God which is what we all should do by doing what he wants from us.

The Virgin Birth

The Virgin Birth was when Mary gave birth without the requirement of a male.

WHAT? - This proves that Jesus was both fully human and yet fully God. If he was born of two humans, he would be nothing but human. If he would have just appeared on Earth, he would be nothing but an alien. It had to be a human that defeated evil.

QUALITIES? - Mary is honoured with the title "Mother of God made man". She also has a special place in Jesus' affections becuase she is his mother as well as ours. We look up to Mary to help us in our prayers as she helped Jesus learn how to pray and live by God.

The Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception was Mary being preserved from sin.

WHAT? - Mary was preserved from sin from the moment of conception as God knew that she was going to accept the offer of becoming the mother of God made man. This day is celebrated on 8th December.

The Assumption

The Assumtion was when Mary was taken to heaven.

WHAT? - Because she lived without sin, when the end of Mary's earthly life came, she was taken up into heaven. This day is celebrated on 15th August.

QUALITIES? - She is the example of what will happen to all those who are faithful to God.

Mother of the Church

Mary is the Mother of the Church because we are all born into Christ in baptism.

The wedding feast of Cana

The wedding feast of Cana was a celebration that both Jesus and Mary attended where she conveyed true faith in Jesus.

WHAT? - At the wedding feast of Cana, Mary told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them to do to help mend the night.

QUALITIES? - She demonstrated great faith in the power and love of Jesus which proved to have no limits. We should take Mary as a role model and share in with this faith.

Jesus' death

At the crucifixion, Mary stood by Jesus' cross all the time.

WHAT? - Mary stood by the cross and truely did experiance the pain of the death of her son.

QUALITIES? - Mary had accepted all that God had requested without any conditions. She is a model of faithfulness that we should follow.
