Working rights of women 1851
jobs for uneducated women were poorly paid and dangerous
Laws were passed to protect women in mines and factories
33% of workers were women earing half a man's wage for the same job
Improvements in 1890s
Protection of wealth and property through the married womens property acts
Could obtain divorces
Custody of the children following a divorce
Pre war women's work
Limited opportunities and poor pay
200,000 women's in mutations industry
900,000 in the same industry by 1918
After the war
Still lacking equality
paid and promoted less
were expected to return to home and let the men resume their old positions
Could now wear trousers
Led to a coalition government ­ chance for an all party agreement
women over 30 could now vote ­ women under still felt too silly and not responsible
Women's war effort likely gave them the vote
