Waste Incineration - Kavish

Advantages

  • provides energy for 29000 homes
  • produces 215,000 tonnes ash, that can be used in road construction
  • landfill has been reduced by 92%
  • saving £91 per tonne in landfill tax
  • over a million tonnes of waste had been processed

Disadvantages

  • increase carbon dioxide emissions
  • reduce recycling rates, wasting valuable resources
  • add to levels of air pollution
  • harm the health of local people
  • very expensive
  • wastes a lot of reusable and recyclable materials

Evaluation

waste incineration can have many benefits such as providing sustainable energy to 29,000 houses this means that locals can have cheaper energy costs. Also the use of waste incinerators has reduced landfills by 92%. waste is burned and the heat is used to produce energy. Therefore the need to keep waste buried at landfill is not needed. Whereas waste incineration also has negatives such as it can add to levels of air pollution this means pressure groups and locals may not agree with the idea of producing energy from waste this will put high pressure on Amey. Also a lot of reusable and recyclable materials are wasted therefore more products are needing to be produced newly rather than recycled, this is also known as the linear waste system. In conclusion I think that Amey should be able to build there new waste incineration plant as it brings much more benefits to the locals whilst reducing strain on resources such as land used from landfill.
