Cornwall: remote rural area

Causes

  • Ageing population as warmer in winter as sea holds heat longer after summer, working age leave for jobs, housing and university
  • Decline of older industries:
  • Farming reduced (tech advancements- mechanisation, less profitable-supermarkets drive down prices, imports)
  • Fishing reduced (quotas)
  • Mining and quarrying reduced (imported, exhausted supply, mechanisation)

Effects

  • Local industry forced to transition to tourism
  • Issues are; seasonal jobs (25%), much done by chains (2/3 of profits leak out of area), U.K. Tourism declining (incomes 25% below U.K. Average), secondary housing (dormant in winter, local industry suffers in winter)
  • 59 post offices closed
  • Death of character, loss of services (medical care less accessible for older population), new developments don't fit, house prices risen
  • No one moves to commute there as geographically remote so no more money comes into area
  • Tried to improve by building university

Overall summary

Decline of industry led to loss of workforce and movement of industry to tourism which has been very damaging to Cornwall's character.
