  • 4.A2C: Measuring change in Kelham Island
    • Employment trends
      • Manufacturing/factory jobs have declined by 51,000 in Sheffield
      • Still home to a few factories, but there are other businesses calling KI home!
      • In the deindustriliasation of the 1970s, 1/10 of Sheffield's workers lost their jobs, this particularly impacted Kelham, as many of the jobs were focussed here
    • Demographic changes
      • Previously not a residential area, is now heavily residential e.g. Little Kelham
      • Has been dubbed in the media as 'gentrification' city
    • Land use changes
      • Prevously an entirely industrial area, is now a mix of residences, and tertiary sector industries
        • The buildings are mostly mixed use e.g. apartments, bars, restaurants
        • Designated a Conservation Area in 1985, to try and preserve Sheffield's historic buildings. A number of listed buildings have been turned into residences
      • E.g. The Globe Works manufacturing centre is now the Globe Business Centre, home to 22 companies
      • Majority of the sites in Riverside area have been approved for residential development, which is likely to occur more in the future
    • Deprivation
      • Previously has been quite environmentally deprived, lots of dereliction + unsafe areas
        • Work has been done to improve this, 'green areas' established
        • Establisment of better lighting levels in public spaces (due to safety concerns)
        • Derelict buildings being regenerated into centres of business, leisure, and culture
