Ensure that the user has entered data into a specified field

Lengh Check
Check that data being entered contains the correct number of characters for the field. For example, if a field required 7 characters to be entered and the user enters 8, the user will be notified of their error.

Format Check
Check to make sure a code being entered contains the correct combination of letters and numbers in the correct places.

Proof - Reading
Rely on the user to carefully read what they have typed in and comparing it with what is on the data source (e.g. order forms, application forms, invoices, etc.) for any errors which can then be corrected.

Double data entry
Check whereby two people use the same data source to enter the details into the ICT system and only if the two sets of data are identical, will they be accepted for processing. However, it just means the data entry is doubled.

Data type check
Make sure the right type of data is entered. For example, if there is a field that requires a number to be entered, then I will check that the user is only entering numbers and not text.

File/Table Lookup
Ensure that data entered is also present in a table of codes to check the data is valid.

Cross field check
Check the data in more than one field together to make sure they make sense.
