Designing of data entry – problems with errors
Problems with inaccurate data
Errors in data can cause problems:
· Incorrect decisions made resulting in loss of money
· Goods being sent to the wrong address
· Having to spend time sorting our mistakes
· Loss of trust
· Prosecution under the Data Protection Act 1998
Validity and correctness of data:
For data to be valid it has to obey certain rules. E.g. input masks, postcode has to be LL00/0LL. Incorrect input would be rejected.
Two ways to reduce errors, Verification and validation
Verification: checking data which is being entered matched the source. Two methods of verification:
Proof reading – involves the user to read the data they have entered against the source to ensure it is correct.
