Isolate the DNA --> PCR 16S gene --> Sequence PCR product --> Analyse data

Why use 16S rRNA to classify bacteria?
It is common to all bacteria. Core gene.

Infection

What are the main bacteria that occupy the skin?
Gram +ves dominant

Bacteroidetes

How does the microflora help in the digestive tract?
Process complex dietary carbohydrates

What do bacteroidetes produce? How are they important?
Sphingosine/ sphingolipids (important in signal transmission and cell recognition in mammals)

What do they help with? (in the human body)
Digest complex sugars

What are the bi-products of polysaccharide metabolism done by bacteroidetes? and how is this useful?
Short chain fatty acids aka. volatile fatty acids - major source of energy for us and protect colon from cancer
