Explain the Health Belief Model?
It is a cognitive model which looks at factors that indicate the possibility of an individual adopting a health behaviour. Based on 2 parts: perceived seriousness and perceived susceptibility.

To use the health belief model to explain a mother's adherence to a drug regime for their asthmatic children.

What was the design of the Becker study?
Correlational design with self report.

What was the sample used in the Becker study?
111 mothers aged 19-54 years that were all attending an emergency childrens centre due to a severe asthma attack.

What was the procedure of self report sectio of the Becker study?
Mother interviewed and asked questions on their childs suseptibility to asthma, their beliefs about seriousness of asthma and how much it inteferred with education and daily activities, and their alleged conforment to asthma medication dosages.

What happened in the Becker study once the self report data was gathered?
It was compared with psychological tests e.g. blood tests to see the medication levels in the child's bloodstreams for a correlation.

What were the results of the Becker study?
Positive correlation between belief about child's suseptiblity to asthma and their compliance with medical regime.

What were the reasons why the mother's did not adhere to the medical regime?
They didn't like to disrupt the daily activities, the child disliked the medication prescribed, and it interruped the schedule.

What was discovered about the 'marriage' part of the results?
That married women and educated women were more likely to comply than single uneducated mothers.
