Primary Socialisation
1st stage of socialisation - learning norms from your family - eg. manners, behavious.

Secondary Socialisation
2nd stage of socialisation - learning norms from school, peers, media, religion, laws and workplace.

Culture
Influences by ethnicity, lifestyle, religion, social class and geographical location. Different assumptions are made which create the norms.

Growth
An increase in physical size which occurs because the number of body cells increases and get bigger and they become more sophisticated

Development
An increase in skill, ability and capacity. Can be Physical, Intellectual, Emotional or Social (PIES)

Nature
What you've inherited genetically, and can't be controlled - eg. eye colour, hair colour etc.

Fine Motor Skills
Involves precise control of small muscles. eg. those in the fingers when picking up a small object, these take longer to develop and are more difficult to acquire

Gross Motor Skills
Using large muscle groups to accomplish skills. eg. crawling or walking.

Inverse Law
The principle that the availability of good medical/social care tends to vary inversely with the need of the population served

Puberty
Happens during adolescence. Major changes occur for boys and girls. eg. girls develop breasts, periods begin, and for boys their voice deepens. There are some changes which occurs in both boys and girls. eg. growth spurt, body hair.

Menopause
Takes a few years to complete. Happens during Middle Adulthood. Eggs are no longer produced, periods stop, hot flushes, reproductive organs shrink.

Dementia
A syndrome where the patient has multiple cognitive deficits and memory loss. Happens in over 50s

Self Concept
How someone perceives themself - being aware of yourself - a combination of self esteem and self image

Self Esteem
Used to describe a person's overall sense of worth or personal value - emotions, beliefs, behaviors etc.

Self Identity
the awareness of one's unique identity

Peer Group
A group of people approximately the same age, status etc. Likely to influence others beliefs and behaviours etc.
