Skills
A learned action/learned behaviour with the intention of bringing about predetermined results, with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy.

Ability
Inherited, stable traits that determine an individual’s potential to learn or acquire a skill.

Basic Skills
Something that has few decisions and tends to be taught to a beginner.

Complex Skills
Something that has lots of decisions and takes time to master.

Open Skills
A skill which is performed in a certain way to deal with a changing or unstable environment, eg to outwit an opponent.

Closed Skills
A skill which is not affected by the environment or performers within it. The skill tends to be done the same way each time.

Self-Paced Skills
The skill is started when the performer decides to start it. The speed, rate or pace of the skill is controlled by the performer.

Externally-Paced Skills
The skill that is started because of an external factor. The speed, rate or pace of the skill is controlled by external factors, eg an opponent.

Fine Skills
A skill that involves the use of small muscle groups and small muscle movements.

Gross Skills
A skill where it involves the use of large muscle groups.

Performance Goals
Focuses on the performers ability and is not a comparison to others. Set using data from what they have already achieved.

Outcome Goals
Used to judge the end result. Can be used as comparisons to other competitors. The focus on the outcome is winning.

Verbal Guidance
Commonly used with visual guidance. Involves another person giving feedback - positive/negative or constructive.

Visual Guidance
A guidance that you can see, a demonstration of a technique.

Manual Guidance
Physically moving the performer - helps the learning of the skill/technique when they have not been able to do it themselves.

Mechanical Guidance
Using mechanical aids to assist the performer - helps the learning of the skill/technique when they may not have been able to do it themselves.

Intrinsic feedback
Internal information that you give yourself before, during or after performance.

Extrinsic Feedback
Information from others that a player receives before, during or after performance.

Information Processing
Making decisions. Gathering data from the display (senses), prioritising the most important stimuli to make a suitable decision.

Input
Information the performer sees, hears or feels. Performer selects the most important or relevant signal/cue/stimulus/information at that time.

Decision making
Performer selects the appropriate response i.e. skill/movement from their memory.

Output
What the performer does. The senses (input) send the information to the brain, the decision is made (decision making), which sends the information to the muscles (output).
