A landscape that has a variety of landforms and features that give it a distinctive appearance and make it special or unique. Often National Parks in the UK.

What factors make Snowdonia's landscape distinctive?
Geology - shaped by volcanic eruptions and glaciation. Land use - National Park, sheep farming, Slate mines, forestry. Vegetation - Diverse, rare species e.g. Snowdon Lily. People - Welsh language, World Heritage sites.

How are physical landscapes affected by human activity?
Positive - Visitors benefit the economy. Negative - congestion, litter, erosion (trampling)

The increased impact on the landscape, resources and services due to the number of tourists in an area.

An area which is protected because of its beautiful countryside, wildlife and heritage.

1) Job creation and diversification from farming to tourism 2) Increased rural income 3) Infrastructure improved to benefit tourists and locals.

What are the negative impacts of human activity in Snowdonia?
1) Congestion on narrow roads 2) Disused slate quarries - scar on landscape 3) Footpath erosion 4) litter and other pollution 5) dilution of local culture and language 6) house prices rise 7) services geared towards tourism

What is an AONB?
An area of outstanding natural beauty is a part of the countryside designated for conservation due to its natural beauty.

How can landscapes be managed?
Protect them via National Park or AONB status; educate visitors; control numbers; restrict planning

How have visitors been managed in Snowdonia?
Designated footpaths that are way marked for visitors. Footpaths are repaired regularly. Information boards at popular locations e.g. Llanberis and Betws-y-Coed. Clearly marked car parks to reduce parking on verges. Strict planning controls.
