What are the 8 stages of the recruitment process?
A vacancy arises, Job description and person spec is made, Job is advertised, Application forms made/given out, Short listing, Interviewing, References, Appointment.

Whats the difference between a job description and person specification?
The job description sets out the duties and responsibilities of the actual job whereas the person spec details the experience, skills and abilities the employee will need.

How could the job be advertised?
Internally - shop window, businesses social media page/website, advertise to current staff. Externally - Newspaper, TV/radio, Bus shelter.

What is short-listing?
This is when the business will shortlist candidates that meet the general requirements of the job, it is often used where there are many applicants.

What type of interviews could be conducted?
Face to face, Telephone, Practical testing, Presentation, Psychometric testing.

What is the difference between internal and external recruitment?
Internal recruitment is when the business recruits for a post within the business by promoting current staff or changing their role. External recruitment is hiring someone who isn't related to the business and will be a new employee.

What are the advantages of internal recruitment?
Existing employees require less training as they understand and know the business, Help motivate and retain employees, Business already knows skills, qualities and personalities of the employee, Cheaper than external, Quicker to implement.

What are the disadvantages of internal recruitment?
May cause friction between employees, May demotivate unsuccessful candidates, May require further recruitment due to a job being left to replace the new one, Business may need to recruit someone with new ideas.

What are the advantages of external recruitment?
Brings new ideas to the business, Business can recruit/advertise to applicants across the country/world, New to the business so therefore can't be manipulated by current staff.

What are the disadvantages of external recruitment?
Can be slow and costly, Requires rigorous selection procedure as the business doesn't know the candidates, Can be demotivating to employees as they feel undervalued and see promotion as unlikely.

What is on the job training?
This involves employees being trained at their work place, while doing their job.

What are the advantages of on the job training?
Employee is still contributing work to the business, Less expensive, Easier to assess progress, Learn from experienced workers, Build good relations with current staff.

What are the disadvantages of on the job training?
Employee may pick up bad habits from the trainer, Doesn't introduce new ideas or working practises, Trainer may be distracted from their own work causing a reduction in productivity.

What is off the job training?
This involves the employee being trained outside of their place of work at colleges of further and higher education, unis, or undertaking self study courses.

What are the advantages of off the job training?
Gives employees the chance to experience new business ideas and working practises, Trainee does not make mistakes in the current business with machinery etc, Given specialist training by qualified people.

What are the disadvantages of off the job training?
Business usually has to pay for the training, Skills taught to the trainee may not be relevant, Trainee will not contribute to the business in terms of work while training, Harder for employers to track how the trainee is doing.

What is induction training?
Specifically aimed towards new employees to familiarise themselves with the business, its ethos, working practises, safety procedures and fellow workers.

What are the overall benefits to training staff? (5)
Reduce wastage in time and materials, Increase flexibility of workforce, Motivates employees as they feel valued, Reduce staff turnover/leaving, Improve productive efficiency and competitiveness by having a highly skilled and motivated workforce.

What are the overall costs of training staff?
Loss of productivity of internal trainers, High cost for external training, General admin costs, Cost for transport, insurance etc, Trained employees may seek a better job, Employees may not pay attention/be more productive from training.
