- war began slowly and not that great for Italy, France's troops arrived in Lombardy before their equipment
- they were short on tents and ammunition
- nevertheless the beat Austria at the Battle of Magenta (4th June) and Solferino (24th June)
- the carnage was horrific
- France lost 12,000 men in Solferino
- medical supplies did not arrive until after the war had ended
- men were laying on the battlefield dying or severely wounded
