Muslim marriage ceremony and the purpose of marriage

During a Muslim marriage ceremony:

  • A nikah (contract)is drawn up.
  • Mahr (dowry) is given to the bride by her husband (can be jewellery, a house, or money).
  • The bride doen't need to be there for the ceremony, witnesses can take her place.
  • An imam often conducts the ceremony, and tells the couple about the responsibilities
