  • During the late 60s and early 70s there was a relaxation in tensions between the superpowers known as detente.
  • In 1967 the Outer Space Treaty was signed, whic prevented the superpowers from putting nuclear weapons in space, and the 1968 Nulcear Non-Proliferation Treaty stated that no superpower would uspply nuclear weapons to other states or assist other states' nuclear development programmes, thus preventing superpower conflict from spreading to other regions of the world.
  • In 1972 SALT 1 was signed. This stated that the USA and USSR would not produce any more strategic ballastic missiles and that nuclear submarines would only be introduced when existing ICBM stocks became obsolete. The ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile) Treaty also limited each superpower to two ABM systems.
