AD400 - 1100 

The Roman Empire had fallen. Under constant attack from barbarian tribes like the Goths, the Roman army was forced to pull its armies back to defend Rome. This left towns to disuse. People returned to tribal existence and all the public health measures the Romans had ensured had been destroyed in the war. 

The collapse of the Roman Empire affected the development of medicine and health BECAUSE:

• Less trade and travel --> dangerous because wars between tribes went on.
