  • Country - Monserrat, Caribbean

  • Cause - Montserrat is on a destructive boundary between the South American Plate and the Caribbean Plate. Soufriere Hills is a composite volcano.

Short term effects / impacts

  • Pyroclastic flows burned building and trees
  • Ash buried over two - thirds of the island
  • Population evacuated to the north of the island

Medium term effects / secondary effects

  • 60% of housing was destroyed
  • Lack of clean water and sewage facilities
  • No hospitals and few schools remained open
