  • GCSE Geography: Restless Earth, Unit 1-5
    • Formation of Fold Mountains/ Ocean Trenches
      • Fold Mountains
        • When a continental and oceanic plate collide, the oceanic is suducted underneath the continental, like the Andes.
      • Ocean Trenches
        • Ocean Trenches are very deep sections of the ocean floor where the oceanic plate goes down.
    • Constructive/Destructive and Conservative plate margins
      • Constructive
        • Where 2 plates are moving away from each other, e.g, the mid-Atlantic ridge.
      • Destructive
        • Where 2 plates are moving towards each other, e.g, the east coats of Japan,
      • Conservative
        • Where 2 plates are moving sideways past each other,e.g, the west coast of the USA.
    • Fold Mountains Case Study: The Alps
      • General Facts
        • Located in central Europe
        • Formed 30 million years ago when the African and European plates collided.
        • Mont Blanc at 4810m is the tallest peak.
      • Human Purpose
        • Framing
          • Steep upland  areas are used to farm Goats, which provide milk, cheese and meat.
          • Sunnier Slopes terraced for p;ant vineyards.
        • HEP
          • Narrow Valleys are dammed to generate HEP, e.g. Switzerland gets 60% of its electricity from HEP.
          • Electricity is used locally and exported.
        • Tourism
          • 100 million tourists visit.
          • 70% of tourists visit the steep, snow covered mountains.
    • Different Volcano types on constructive/ destructive and conservative plate margins
      • Composite Volcanos
        • Made of Ash and Lava to from alternate layers.
        • Steep-sided Volcano
      • Shield Volcanoes
        • Made  of only lava.
        • Low, flat Volcano
      • Dome Volcanoes
        • Made of only lava.
        • Steep-sided Volcano
    • Volcanic Eruption  Case Study; Montserrat
      • Primary and Secondary impacts
        • Primary Impacts
          • 19 people died and 7 were injured.
        • Secondary Impacts
          • Volcanic ash has improved soil fertility.
      • General Facts
        • June 25th 1997
        • 4.5 million m3 of rocks and gas
      • Immediate and long term responses
        • Immediate Responses
          • People were evacuated from the south to safe areas in the north.
