CASE STUDY - ANTARCTICA TOURISM IN EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS

Antartica is the coldest place on Earth (it can reach minus 80 degree Celsius) and therefore is an extreme environment. It is a continent at the Earth's South Pole and 98% is covered in ice.

Antarctia is becoming more popular with tourists.

  • There were almost 46,000 tourists visiting Antarctica in 2007/2008 and the number is rising every year.
  • Tourists are attracted by the stunning scenery (e.g. icebergs) and the wildlife (e.g. penguins and whales).

Tourism has environmental impacts on Antartica

It takes a long time for the land in Antarctica to recover from damage because it is so cold (in other words, it has a fragile land eco-system). This
