there is a theory of audience reception created by Stuart Hall, he theorised that there were four main ways people couldinterprate a film.

1. Preferred meaning

   we 'decode' the film the way the creator intended us to decode it aka we 'get' it

2. negotiated meaning

   we understand the preferred meaning but we adapt it to fit our own knowledge,opinions or tastes . This is the most common way people digest films

3. oppositional meaning

   we understand the preferred meaning bur reject it and interpret against it.

4. aberrant meaning

   we don't understand the preferred meaning and don't 'get' it.
