denotation:  

refers to the staright forward, objective meaing of kind of meaning we might expect to find if we looked the word up in a dictionary. eg the word summer denotes the season beetwen spring and autumn.

conotations of a word are associations that a word has and attitudes  that are aroused by it these can be positive or negative. the case of summer the connotations are genarally positive. most people associate.

they are very important when anylysing texts. writers choose their texts carefully. we need to think about the thoghts feelings and ideas convayed by particular words.

aslo it is important to note down if words such as gloomy,miserable and dark appear close
