solid-compact atoms all close together. these particles can't move physically move but can only vibrate.

liquid-these particles are still compact but can just about slip around eachother causing movement of the liquid

gas-these particles are not compact and can move about freely making gas hard to control and contain it.

protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of an atom. whereas the electrons surround the nucleus (neutrons and protons)
