Do you agree with the view that the break with Rome was brought about primarily by
Henrys desire for a male heir?
Jessica Potter.
I agree with the view that the break with Rome was brought about primarily by Henrys desire
for a male heir. I believe that Henry broke with Rome so that he could become the head of
his own church and give himself a divorce as he wasn't getting a male heir with his current
wife. However it could also be seen that her broke with Rome in order to give himself more
power of the people and the church.
Source 4 and 5 both agree that Henrys break with Rome was due to him wanting a divorce
and primarily wanting a male heir. Source 4 says, "The 1530s saw a breach with Rome which
came about as a matter of state policy. Henry VIII wanted a divorce." It shows that Henry
desperately wanted a divorce in hope another woman could give him a male heir and as the
pope denied his annulment the only chance he had left was by creating his own church and
religion. Source 5 also says, "From December 1532 Anne's pregnancy was also a pressing
factor." This shows that again Anne's pregnancy, divorce and Henrys desire for a male heir
was why Henry wanted to break with Rome.
Source 6 on the other hand proposes the idea that Henry's break with Rome came about by
the fact he wanted more power and authority. Source 6 says, "...pretended power of the
bishop of Rome had for years blinded them to the great limitations on the King's authority."
This shows that Henry wanted the common people to see him as having all the power and
authority not the Bishop of Rome. Source 5 also says, "...clear justification for national
independence." This disagrees with the view that the break with Rome was brought about
primarily by Henry's desire for a male heir. This is because this says that Henry broke with
Rome so the fact that by doing this England would have more independence, power and
authority as a country.
In terms of reliability Source 6 is very reliable. This is because it was written in 1535 which
was very close to the time that these events were happening. On the other hand Gardiner
who wrote this was the Kings printer so he would want to stay on the kings good side and
the was in favour of the Royal Supremacy. Source 5 is also not that reliable as it was written
in 1983 there for it happened a long time before this was published. The same could be said
about Source as it was written in 1984 which again was a very long time after all these
events had happened.
In conclusion I think that the break with Rome was primarily due to Henrys desire for a male
heir and wanting a divorce. Due to the pope refusing to give him an annulment, the only
other way to go from the was to create his own church, putting himself head of the church
and giving himself a divorce.
