Natural Woods
SOLID BEECH FOR LEGS AND FRAMEWORK
Expect reference to:
Use of circular saws/dimension saws to cut pieces to size- cutting all pieces of
same dimension at the same time to avoid wasting time adjusting machine.
Use of `stops' and guides to ensure parts are cut to size quickly and square..
CNC machining e.g. CNC router to machine slots, holes etc for the various KD
fittings.
Alternatively use of templates/jigs for use with a manual router and drills.
Use of mortice S (if traditional joining methods described)- cutting all mortice
holes at the same time and using depth stops on the machine. Cutting all
tenons at the same time on band saw or using a router with template.
Use of marking gauges set to correct dimension. Use of go/no-go gauges to
check dimensional accuracy. Possible use of bench fixtures/clamps if
candidates describe gluing framework.
PINE- INTERIOR FURNITURE
Pine is a sustainable timber- grown in managed forests ensuring long term supply
required for furniture production.
Pine is not the best material for exterior joinery because it will rot unless treated
with preservatives. It is best used for interior purposes.
Pine is relatively soft, making it easy to work with hand tools and will not blunt
planers, saws etc like some hardwoods will.
Pine is widely available and therefore suitable for manufacture at any scale of
production.
Pine has an attractive colour and grain to suit modern interiors
Pine can be finished with a variety of stains, varnishes or paints to suit a wide variety
of tastes/fashions. Cheaper than hardwood such as oak.
NAME 2 HARDWOODS
ASH and OAK
APPLICATION AND REASON FOR OAK
Oak for a coffee table.
Aesthetically pleasing due to grain pattern and mid brown colour.
Easy to cut with standard tooling such as band saws to enable legs and parts to be
cut to shape. Tough material will be able to withstand items such as TV remote
controls being dropped onto it.
SOFTWOODS
Pine, spruce, red deal, scots pine etc
HARDWOODS
oak, beech, mahogany, balsa, iroko, teak
SUITABLE PURPOSE FOR HARDWOODS
Beech - chopping board, Teak -outdoor furniture Mahogany - batch produced
furniture Oak - wine barrelsetc

MEANING OF THIS LOGO
This is the Forest Stewardship Council (F.S.C) logo. It indicates
that the timber is sourced from sustainable forests.
BEECH- CHOPPING BOARD
. Beech is a close grained hardwood which is needed to
help prevent food being absorbed into the chopping board.
. Beech has good hardness which helps it to resist cutting from knives.
. Aesthetic suits modern kitchens

E.g.
MDF is available in long- wide boards which means that a large surface like the table
top can be made more easily than joining lots of planks together.
MDF can be machined to take Knock- Down fittings typically used to assemble such
products.
The laminate finish used on the MDF protects the table from hot drinks, plates, etc
and is hard so would withstand wear and tear through daily use.…read more

EXPLAIN HOW THE STRUCTURE OF PLYWOOD GIVES THE MATERIAL STRENGTH.
Wood veneers are laminated with synthetic resin with their grain running at right
angles to each other. This gives the board uniform strength- i.e. all parts of the board
are equally as strong

Ferrous metals
MILD STEEL SHEET- CAR BODY PANEL
Mild steel is a malleable material which means it can be press formed into the shape
required and retain the shape.
Mild steel is a ductile material which means it can stretch over the forming die
without tearing or splitting.
Mild steel can be spot welded easily because it has good fusibility properties. Spot
welding is one of the main ways of fabricating the body panels.…read more

APPLICATION STAINLESS STEEL
Kitchen sink, saucepans, kitchen utensils, cutlery
SUITABLE METAL FOR THE SINK
Stainless steel does not corrode when exposed to moisture and air. Corrosion would
make the sink look unsightly.
Stainless steel is malleable/ductile so it can be press formed into the shape of the
sink.
Stainless steel has an attractive silver appearance which makes it aesthetically
pleasing and suitable for a modern setting.
Stainless steel is hard, which means it will resist scratching and indentation.…read more

Mild steel is a malleable material which can be rolled into shape or extruded into a
tube. Mild steel is a hard material and will withstand being dropped and the wear &
tear of daily use. Chrome plating protects the steel from corrosion and gives the
product an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
STAINLESS STEEL- PARK BENCH
Stainless steel is a very hard material and will withstand attempts at vandalism e.g.
scratching.
E.g. Stainless steel does not corrode and therefore will withstand the effects of
weather.
