What Hindered and Helped the Nazi Party in the 1920's?

Causes

  • 1)  Nazi Promises: Solve the economic crisis and get people back to work. Destroy the T.O.F. Restore power of the Army. Make Germany powerful again, be strong leaders of the Country.
  • 2)  Fear of Communism: As lives became difficult, workers started to support the Communist party. This terrified German business men and farmers; they had seen communism in action in the Soviet Union where the Government had taken over the land and wealth from big industries and farmers.
  • 3)  Hitler's Leadership: He was charismatic and an influential speaker who was able to get across Nazi ideas and manipulate German people into believing what he had said. He was surrounded by a team of loyal and effective leaders.
  • 4)  Nazi Propaganda: Josef Goebbels in charge of Nazi propaganda, used latest technology to spread it. In 1932, Hitler travelled around Germany to indoctrinate as many people as possible. Mass rallies made people feel proud to be German. Posters were effectively used.
  • 5)  Local Organisations: 100,000 members by 1929, local leaders ran public meetings, provided careful and well trained speaker. Local parties helped unemployed by providing soup kitchens etc. SA gained reputation of 'disciplined young men'
  • 6)  Weak Opposition: Opponents  - Social Democrats, Communists. Neither took the Nazi's seriously and wanted to battle. Voters didn't trust social democrats due to their lack off organisation.
  • 7)  Political Problems: Stresemann died in 1929; days before Wall Street Crash. A series of weak, short-lived Governments. Some Governments made matters worse during the depression by cutting pay and benefits which led to poverty.

Effects

  • 1)  The chaos and despair of the depression led to people losing faith in democratic parties. They then wanted to hear the messages the Nazi Party were spreading.
  • 2)  The middle class, business men and farmers didn't want the communist party to get into power so they turned to the Nazi's instead due to their anti-communist attitude. Rich business men gave them money for campaigning.
  • 3)  Hitler's speeches gained a great deal of support for the Nazi's which evidently improved their % of supporters in the elections.
  • 4)  The propaganda got the Nazi message across to people effectively.
  • 5)  The local measures of the Nazi party impressed German citizens when the national government was ineffective. The apparent discipline of the SA was attractive when there was so much violence around the election meetings (1930-32) although it was partially the SA's fault.
  • 6)  Weak opposition meant the Nazi's policies were NOT questioned, the opposes offered nothing.
  • 7)  Weak Government made the Nazi messages more strong. Some people had never forgiven the Weimar government for the T.O.F. The 'stab in the back', reparations and hyper inflation.

Overall summary

THE POLITICAL DEAL: 1932, Hitler wanted to be Chancellor, Hindenburg refused and appointed Franz von Papen as Chancellor, von Papen was failing as a leader to he was replaced with von Schleicher. Papen wanted revenge so he turned to Hitler and created the political deal. Hitler would be Chancellor and Papen would be Vice Chancellor. They eventually persuaded Hindenburg to agree with their plan.
