Causes

The Costa Rican government are developing their forest in a sustainable way - through ecotourism. They are building popular tourist facilities like zip wires and trails.
They are allowing the American company, Merck, to look for plants that can be used in fragrances and medicines.

Effects

This will bring a lot of money to the area which they can use to conserve and further manage the rainforest. Tourists will also become more aware of the importance of rainforest management.
The Costa Rican government will get a share of any profits made which will again go to the conservation of the forests. It also means that the full uses of the forest are being discovered with minimal environmental impacts.

Overall summary

By making money from their rainforest the Costa Rican government will be able to continue to develop the forest in a sustainable way. They can also make people more aware of how important it is to conserve the rainforests.
