'Christmas is no longer a religious festival' (12)

Advantages

  • Christmas is too commercialised e.g. breakfast with Santa, visit to see Father Christmas, special events at attractions e.g. Alnwick Gardens, Weardale railway
  • Advertising for Christmas more likely to see reindeers, snowmen, santa than a nativity scene or any reference to Christianity Secular activities - parties etc
  • Christmas was originally a pagan festival
  • Christmas parties, spending time with friends and familiesreference to Xmas, removing the word Christ from Christmas
  • Holidays from work

Disadvantages

  • Nativities at school
  • Giving and receiving of gifts reference to the gifts from the wise men
  • Christmas services, Christingle
  • Advent period of time  (services and calendars counting down to the birth of Christ)
  • Christmas carols are sung
  • Christians thank God for his gift of Jesus
  • Focus on family, children, the poor and lonely to make Christmas a time of  love and being together with family and friends.
  • Christians show their faith to the world

Evaluation

In conclusion, I believe that although there is evidence that Christmas has become commercialised, Christmas is still a religious festival for many, and holds great importance and value. Furthermore, we can see that people have not forgotten that Christmas is a religious holiday through the fact that many schools have nativity plays at school, or Christmas (religious) hymns are sung.
