    • Why did men join up and conditions at war.
      • wealth, fame glory, prestige and bravery

      • conscription: when a government makes it compulsory to join.
      • propaganda: one sided information presented for a particular purpose usually to make people do something
      • Government's problems:
        • small professional army
        • recruit quickly
        • recruitment drive: posters, leaflets, offices and speeches
      • Weren't given right equipment, not much training, terrified, no relation to outside world, horrible conditions
    • Stalemate on the Western Front and other fronts.
      • Battle of the Somme
        • Stalemate: a position in which no action can be taken or made
        • breaking the stalemate to relieve pressure on Verdun
        • Poor judgement, intelligence and communcation
        • Too self assured
      • Italian Front: Joined allies in 1915
        • Hope to get their hands on Austrian territory
        • Major defeat in 1917 but better in 1918
      • The Balkans: British and French sent troops to support Serbs, nothing happened
      • Eastern Front: Russians fought Germans and Austians
        • Russians retreat for most of 1914 to 1915
        • Very successful offensive in 1916
        • Stops fighting as Communists take over in 1917 Revolution
      • Middle East: British sent forces to protect their oil suppplies
      • Gallipoli: Bold attempts from Allies to knock Turkey out of the war
        • Failed because of disastrous landing on peninsula
          • Poor preparation, organizing, lack of commitment from senior officers
    • End of WWI and peace treaty.
      • Naval blockade makes Germans rise against leaders and starve
      • Get America as and ally to replace Russia; in last stages, Germany is exhausted and allies try to make them surrender
      • Peace Treaty:
        • Britain: take Germany's colonies, and basic resources as well as weapons.
        • France: Germany's land, want them to become weak.
        • America: want nothing to do with European conflicts, want an end to colonies.
