- Strengths
- Intitially signed by 45 countries.
- Reorganised the world map in which three major empires had just collapsed.
- Many of the boundaries the treaty put in place still exist today.
- Today it is generally accepted as a genuine attempt to create a better world free from war.
- Weaknesses
- Deeply unpopular .
- Japan and Italy were resentful. They felt that the treaty had not rewarded them sufficiently for their contribution to the allied side in the war.
- Many American delegates hated the treaty and went home to try and persuade the US Congress to reject it.
- Many British delegates hated it.
- Many British people believed that the treaty was too harsh.
- Lloyd George predicited it would not prevent, but cause another war.
- Deeply unpopular .
