  • The Treaty of Versailles 1919
    • Strengths
      • Intitially signed by 45 countries.
      • Reorganised the world map in which three major empires had just collapsed.
        • Many of the boundaries the treaty put in place still exist today.
      • Today it is generally accepted as a genuine attempt to create a better world free from war.
    • Weaknesses
      • Deeply unpopular .
        • Japan and Italy were resentful. They felt that the treaty had not rewarded them sufficiently for their contribution to the allied side in the war.
        • Many American delegates hated the treaty and went home to try and persuade the US Congress to reject it.
        • Many British delegates hated it.
          • Many British people believed that the treaty was too harsh.
          • Lloyd George predicited it would not prevent, but cause another war.
