  • Types of EV's
    • Demand Characteristic- Clues from experiment which might change p's behaviour
    • Participant Variables- individual differences that are between p's (age, gender)
    • Order Effects- a practice or boredom effect which p's display from completing more than one condition of the same experiment
    • Investigator Effects- Researcher's behaviour and characteristics which may unconsciously affect p's behaviour (bias, voice)
    • Situational Variables- Features of the experimental environment (time, day etc.)
  • Control of EV's
    • Standardisation-  exposing p's to exactly the same instructions from the same researcher in the same environment
    • Blind Test (Double)- p's and researcher who is collecting the data are unaware of the conditions
    • Blind Test (Single)- p's are unaware of what conditions they're being tested in
    • Randomisation- use of chance rather than investigator influence to design materials and order of conditions
    • Counter Balancing- ensuring order effects are balanced equally between conditions
