- SOURCES OF PERSONAL AND ETHICAL DECISION MAKING
- JESUS
- People look to Jesus to see what he would have done.
- GOLDEN RULE: 'Do to others as you would have them do to you'.
- 'Love God and love your neighbour as yourself'
- Sermon on the mount.
- NATURAL LAW
- Moral order designed by God at the creation so that if people work in harmony with it, they will be living as they should.
- The Catholic Church teaches that the order of creation is natural law. It must be followed by Christians because it is what God established.
- Same-sex marriage is against natural law, as the human race will not be continued, and so is seen as wrong.
- CONSCIENCE
- The voice of conscience is the work of God, and so Christians should follow it. God is speaking directly to the individuals.
- ST Paul and St Thomas Aquinas taught that Christians should use their conscience as the final part of moral decision making.
- Christians are doubtful about conscience as the word of God can be mistaken.
- MAGISTERIUM
- Most Catholics use this.
- It is guidance given by the Pope and inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- JESUS
