- Short Term seperation
- Bowlby's MDH
- Brief separation from caregiver e.g. nursery.
- Children's reaction: (PDD) Protest, Dispair, Detatchment
- Research
- Robertson and Robertson: studied John, who spent 9 days in a nursery, away from his mother (who he had a close and stable reaction with). He experienced severe distress and when he was reunited with his mother, he was confused and struggled to get away from her
- The effect of this was shown many years later. This supports the PDD model and Bowlby's MDH.
- Kagan: no causal link between separation and later difficulties
- Robertson and Robertson: studied John, who spent 9 days in a nursery, away from his mother (who he had a close and stable reaction with). He experienced severe distress and when he was reunited with his mother, he was confused and struggled to get away from her
- Evaluation
- Based on a case study, so individual differences mean can;t generalise to all children in nursery.
- Only correlational, no causal link
- Can be applied to allow more visting times for children in hospitals
