      • Rio de Janeiro is situated on Brazils Atlantic coast.
        • It has grown up around a large bay known as Guanabara bay.
      • Until 1960 Rio was the capital of Brazil but the capital is now Brasilia.

      • Rio is Brazils second most important industrial centre, producing 5% of Brazils GPD.
      • Rio has a major port- main exports are sugar, coffee and iron ore.
      • Main service industries are finance, banking and insurance.
      • Main manufacturing industries are chemicals,      pharmaceuticals, clothing, furniture and processed foods.
      • Stunning natural surroundings and amazing beaches make Rio one of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere.

      • Rio has grown rapidly in the last 50 years to become a major industrial, administrative, commercial and tourist centre.
      • The large scale economic activities have attracted many migrants from Brazil and many other countries to swell the population of the city.
      • The many migrants that have moved to Rio have caused Rio to become more of an economic country.
      • The migrants have cause Rio to become a racially mixed population.
      • Many new migrants have come from China and Korea seeking new business opportunities.
    • Land uses in Rio
      • Rio has a large number of mountains, costs and squatter settlements. Rio is split up into 4 different zones.
        • North zone:This is were the cities main industrial port areas are located along with the cities national airport. This is also an area of low-quality houses and favelas.
        • west zone: Barra de Tijuca has changed from a lower class area into a wealthy costal suburb with luxury apartments, shopping malls, recreational facilities and tourist facilities. There is also an industrial area where low-quality housing is present and steel works is the main employment industry.
        • South zone: Developed after tunnels were cut through the mountains. This is where Rio's main tourist attractions are along with hotels. This area is a is dominated by luxury flats and is the wealthiest district in the whole of south America.
        • Centro: This is the oldest part of the city, with many historic buildings, it is also the cities CBD and main shopping area. Also, it is the cities financial headquarters.
