- Rio has a large number of mountains, costs and squatter settlements. Rio is split up into 4 different zones.
- North zone:This is were the cities main industrial port areas are located along with the cities national airport. This is also an area of low-quality houses and favelas.
- west zone: Barra de Tijuca has changed from a lower class area into a wealthy costal suburb with luxury apartments, shopping malls, recreational facilities and tourist facilities. There is also an industrial area where low-quality housing is present and steel works is the main employment industry.
- South zone: Developed after tunnels were cut through the mountains. This is where Rio's main tourist attractions are along with hotels. This area is a is dominated by luxury flats and is the wealthiest district in the whole of south America.
- Centro: This is the oldest part of the city, with many historic buildings, it is also the cities CBD and main shopping area. Also, it is the cities financial headquarters.
