Project started in 1995
Project involves 253 000 people in 73 favelas
40% of the $300m funding for the project came from the local authority. Rest was
provided by an international organisation
Social Economic Environmental
Daycare centres/after Residents can apply to Replacement of
school schemes to look legally own their wooden buildings with
after children while properties brick buildings
parents work Training schemes to Widening and paving of
Adult education classes help people learn new streets to allow easier
Services to help people skills so they can find access
affected by drug and better jobs and earn Provision of basic
alcohol addiction and more services e.g. clean
domestic violence water, electricity
Community involvement:
Residents choose which improvements they want (feel involved)
Neighbourhood associations formed to communicate with residents and make decisions
New services are staffed by residents (provides income)
The project has been very successful
Standard of living/health has improved
Local businesses doubled
