      • Asclepius
        • the god of healing
        • the temples were used for healing. the sick went there to be cured. They believed that at night, when all the sick were sleeping, Asclepius would cure everyone.
          • the priests would administer ointments, perform rituals, and place snakes on the patient (snakes were Asclepius' sacred animal)

        • yellow bile, black bile, blood, phlegm
        • the unbalancing of these caused disease

        • was a Roman in the Greek Times
        • came up with the theory of the four humours
        • he wanted there to be a more logical approach for medicine, and so came up with theory
          • he advised balancing the humours, but also recognised the importance of exercise, hygiene, and healthy eating
        • he said that you should write everything successful down, which he did. He wrote many books which all formed part of 'the Hippocratic Collection'
          • shows further understanding of diagnosis, observation and treatment
          • He suggested that no treatment should be done until reasonable diagnosis was complete

    • Attitudes
      • hygiene was key in Greece
        • Washing skin, hair, and teeth was essential - especially when being treated for disease
      • 'A Regiment for Health' was a book about what to eat during the different seasons - eating a lot and drinking a little in winter, while in summer you eat a little and drink a lot
    • Science and Technology
      • surgeons found a good technique for setting broken bones
      • range of surgical instruments were made such as scalpels, forceps, shears, probes and hooks - all madde from iron, steel and brass
