Islamic medicine was quite significant in the Medieval period because it had a noteworthy impact on medical ideas in the West during the Middle Ages. Islamic medical discoveries as well as the old medical knowledge of the ancient Greeks were taught at the University in Padua. In addition, Islamic medical ideas reached England, through trade, as merchants bought new equipment, drugs and books. This led to medicine beginning to be developed in England, where progress had been slow due to the oppression of the Church. Furthermore, Muslim doctors translated the texts of Greek and Roman doctors at a time when these ideas had been forgotten in Western Europe. Avicenna wrote a huge medical encyclopedia known as the “Canon of Medicine”. It collected the knowledge of ancient Greek and the Islamic world, and was used as the standard medical textbook for European doctors until the seventeenth century. This led to doctors developing a better understanding of diseases, and their cures.
