The Internet

WWW (World Wide Web)
A system of interlinked hypertext documents [1] that are accessed via the internet using a browser [1].

URL (Universal Resource Locator)
A unique address [1] identifying every resource on the internet [1].

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
A prrotocol/ set of rules which specifies [1] how data is transfered over the internet [1].

IP Address
A unique physical address [1] of each computer linked to the internet [1]. Can be static or dynamic [1]. A group of 4 sets of numbers separated by a dot [1].

Web Browser
An application running on a users computer [1] that is responsible for requesting text and graphics of webpages from the web server on the internet [1].

Web Server
Provides webpages [1] in responce to requests from web users [1].

Web Hosting
Allows an iddividual organisation to make their website accessible via the WWW [1]. Provides a space on a server owned or leased for use by the clients [1].

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
A protocol for the transfer of files across the internet to a web server [1]. Users can access a server request that a file be downloaded to them or upload the file to the web server where they are stored [1].

ISP (Internet Service Provider)
Has direct links to the internet and accepts transmission from users over communication lines and passes these onto the internet [1]. It sells internet access and provides access to web servers which connect to search engines on the internet [1].

Search Engine
Web-based tool that searches for info using keywords or criteria [1]. They use a spider or webcrawler. This programme "crawls" through the web [1].

Cache
Allows browsers to download images, data and documents for faster viewing [1]. The browser will be able to load some info from each page you visit without downloading that info again [1]. Situated closest to the processoe [1].

Cookies
Small files downloaded to a computer when visiting a webpage [1]. They store previous activity on that site and user preferences. The collected info can be used when the user visits the site again [1].

Portal
Acts as a main entry point to a group of web services [1]. Can require user log on and provides a range of services (Email, links and search engine) [1].

Website
A collection of HTML pages [1] linked together on the World Wide Web [1].

Webpage
A page of info stored on the WWW [1]. Written on HTML and viewed using a web browser. Can contain text, sound, video and hypertext (a link to other webpages) [1].
