Internet - Global communications system linking computers geographically seperate locations through various telecommunications.E.G. telephone lines, satellites.
It allows for fast communications between computers or other devices, the transfer of data between computers and distribution of info.

World Wide Web - A collection of info on computer connected to internet

Universal Resource Locator - A unique address for referring to resources on internet
It's rarely necessary to type the url in full, most browsers have defaults for portions of url.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol - Protocol that defines the process of identifying, requesting and transferring multimedia web pages over the internet

IP address - Each computer linked to the internet has a physical address, IP address
Uniquely identifies the physical computer linked to internet. Static IP- computers connected to internet at all times and have same IP address.Dynamic IP- Ip address could be different each time you log in.

Web Browser - The application running on a user's computer that's responsible for requesting the text and graphics of webpages from servers on the internet.
E.G. mozilla Firefox, Google chrome. Most allow the user to save the page address of sites they visit often, as a bookmark or favourite.

Web server - Provides internet pages for other computers through internet.
It provides the cache of web pages, which are pages stored when first accessed so they can be supplied later without the delay of accessing the internet.

Web hosting - a type of internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via World Wide Web.
They are companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients as well as providing internet connectivity, typically in a data center.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) - movement of files across the internet.
Users can access a server holding the required file and request that it be downloaded. Alternatively a user can send a file to a server that will accept uploads

Internet service provider (ISP) - AN organization that has direct links to the internet & accepts transmissions from users over dial up or broadband connections.
Most users of internet access through any one of a number of commercial internet service providers. E.G. Sky, BT

Search Engine - An application accessed over the internet that maintains indexes of webpages
The search engine will compare this list with pages in its index and generate a page of hyperlinks that users can click to go to most webpages. Try to rank pages in terms of usefulness by noting how often words searched appear.

Cache - A store of recently accessed webpages and images they contain, kept by browser
If a user revisits a page it can be loaded from local copy without internet access. If the webpage is reloaded it will appear the same as the last visit so wont show any new data.

Cookies - Small files placed on the hard drive of a users computer by a website that they visited.
On a subsequent visit to the same site, the cookie detected and the site knows the user has visited before. Personal info already entered doesn't need re-entered and the owner of the site can build a picture of what the users sees.

Portal - A website designed to be the one that a user will want to visit first on the web
Allows the user to create their own customized page made up of links to info.

Website - collection of webpages at the same domain and usually maintained by a single individual or organization
The user moves between pages by clicking on hyperlinks. This causes a new page to be loaded or parts of the existing page to be refreshed with new info.

Webpage - A document accessed in a browser.
It'll generally contain text and graphics.Elements not stored on webpage but are loaded by the users browser from the location specified by URI on page.
