Pressure Groups
A Pressure Group is an organised group that does not hold candidates for election, but seeks to influence and change government policy or legislation. They are also described as 'interest groups', 'lobby groups' or 'protest groups'.

Insider groups are those which are regarded as legitimate by the government and are consulted on a regular basis.

Outsider Groups
Outsider groups are those which are not closely involved with decision makers and which find it more difficult to get their voices heard.

A pressure group or protest movement that focuses on a single issue

Pluralism
Characterised by a wide spread distribution of power. In a pluralist democracy, power is dispersed which means that can try to influence decision-making in a wide variety of ways not only at elections but also between elections.

Democracy
A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Accountability
The fact or condition of being accountable; responsibility.

Functional Representation
Pressure Groups can represent specific sections of society or the interests of an entire community.

Open Society
A society characterized by a flexible structure, freedom of belief, and wide dissemination of information.

Civil Society
Society considered as a community of citizens linked by common interests and collective activity.

Political Participation
Those actions of private citizens by which they seek to influence or to support government and politics. - Participation in electoral processes involves much more than just voting.

Expert Authority
The right to control, command, or determine.

Policy Networks
A field of research in political science focusing on the links and interdependence between government's sections and other societal actors, aiming to understand the policy-making process and public policy outcomes.

Direct Action Groups
A group that take an action which is intended to reveal an existing problem, highlight an alternative, or demonstrate a possible solution to a social issue.

Postmodern Politics
Refers to the use of postmodern ideas in political science.

Globalisation
The process in which people, ideas and goods spread throughout the world, spurring more interaction and integration between the world's cultures, governments and economies.

Rightful Power
The ability to influence or outright control the behavior of people.

Illegitimate Power
The action or practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.

Tyranny of The Minority
A small group of people such as political leaders have all the power.
