Unit 1 - Dynamic Planet

?
Structure of the Earth
The Earth is made up of four concentric layers.
1 of 6
Inner core
This layer is the centre of the Earth. It is also the hottest part of the Earth and it's about 1250 km thick. . It is a solid ball of metal which consists of iron and nickel. The inner core can reach temperatures of up to 5000-6000 degrees Celsius.
2 of 6
Outer core
This layer surrounds the inner core and is a liquid magma layer consisting of iron and nickel. The outer core is about 2200 km thick and can reach temperatures of up to 4000-5000 degrees Celsius.
3 of 6
Mantle
This layer is the biggest layer and it's about 2900 km thick. The top part of the mantle is made up of cold dense rock but lower down, the rock is soft and beginning to melt . The average temperature of the mantle is 3000 degrees Celsius.
4 of 6
Crust
This is a thin outer layer of the Earth which is about 60 km thick. The two types of crust are continental crust, granite, and oceanic crust, basalt. Temperatures start at about 200 degrees Celsius and can rise up to 400 degrees Celsius.
5 of 6
Convection Currents
Convection currents are a transfer of geothermal heat. Heat rises in the core and creates very strong convectional currents in the mantle. Thy are strong enough to move tectonic plates on the Earth's crust.
